DABOLIM: Following a site inspection, Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho said that the well contamination was a definite result of storage tank or pipeline leaks.
Godinho informed that a formal complaint could be filed to look into possible wrongdoing in the incident.
“This is the third such incident; the first two occurred in Sancoale and Bogmalo years ago. To guarantee that people will once again have access to water, corrective action must be taken,” he added.
Godinho said that in the past, there have also been instances of fuel theft from the main pipelines that lead from the ship to the storage tanks in the port. The authorities are required to look into this angle as well.
“The WRD department will be in charge of filing a FIR, should they deem it necessary. To ensure a comprehensive investigation, the local body may take the necessary actions to file a formal complaint,” he added.
A well at Matvem-Dabolim area was sealed by the government authorities and the oil company after it was found that water was contaminated with a petroleum product.
Suspecting a leakage in the fuel pipelines of oil terminal companies, fire officials have asked owners of wells in close proximity not to use the water or cook.
The action to seal the well was taken after the panchayat body wrote to disaster management of the contamination of the well with petroleum products.
The fire department has sealed the well and has further advised people not to use the water and to refrain from cooking in close proximity of the well.
