Margao: Residents of Margao may soon see relief from the persistent traffic congestion on the western side of the city, especially around the busy Comba railway crossing, with the approval of a new road connectivity project.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has cleared a proposal to connect the Margao Western Bypass with the Vidya Vikas Mandal (VVM) educational complex. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 25 crore, is expected to significantly improve access to the area.
Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Digambar Kamat announced on Friday that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the PWD has been approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Kamat said the ministry has granted approval for the construction of the connecting road between the Western Bypass and the VVM campus, and that the PWD plans to invite tenders for the project within the next month.
He explained that the proposed road will serve as a crucial “missing link” and is likely to ease traffic pressure in the Comba area, where congestion frequently builds up due to the railway crossing.
At present, commuters travelling to the VVM educational hub from the southern and western parts of Margao are required to cross the railway tracks or take a longer route via Khareband. Once the new road is completed, motorists will be able to directly access the VVM complex from the Western Bypass, reducing travel time and congestion.
The project is also expected to improve the overall utility of the Margao Western Bypass. Although the Central Government had earlier constructed the bypass at considerable cost, it currently lacks direct connectivity to the city.
Because of this, residents often have to travel towards Benaulim or Nuvem to join the bypass while heading towards Panaji or the southern parts of Goa. The proposed link road is expected to address this gap and make the bypass more accessible to city commuters.
