VASCO: What will be the fate of Vaddem lake without proper maintenance? The Vaddem lake has developed green moss, and the water has again started giving a foul smell.
The Vaddem lake, which was once an eye candy of the Port town, has now been not appropriately maintained. Perhaps there is a question mark who will maintain the lake, the municipality or the Water Resource Department (WRD).
A few years back, this lake was beautified by spending crores of rupees of the government fund and was inaugurated at the hands of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, but sadly the maintenance part of this lake got neglected totally with the passing time.
When contacted by the Chief Officer of Mormugao municipal council Jayant Tari, he said that as per his knowledge, the de-weeding of this lake was done last year by putting a de-weeding machine to clear the infested lake with the moss.
He further said that the water bodies are supposed to be maintained by the Water Resource Department (WRD). I am not sure whether the lake has been handed over to the municipality or not. I will have to look into the matter,” he added.
It may be recalled that a few days ago in the same lake, several fishes of average size were found dead floating in the lake water. The exact reason behind the suspicious death of these fishes was unknown. Goemkarponn reporter at that time had contacted Goa State Pollution Control Board Member Secretary Shamila Monteiro and had brought this issue to her notice. She had also assured me to look into this matter then, but nothing has happened to date.
