Assam: On February 24, 2025, Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium was abuzz with cultural fervor as Assam marked a significant milestone: 200 years of its tea industry. The event, ‘Jhumoir Binandini,’ brought together over 8,000 artists from tea garden communities to perform the traditional Jhumoir dance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the event, highlighting the importance of Assam’s tea heritage and its contribution to India’s rich cultural tapestry.
During his speech, PM Modi praised the tea gardens of Assam, noting that no one understands the fragrance of tea better than a “chaiwala” (tea vendor). He emphasized the pride and diversity that such grand events bring to Assam and India, mentioning that over 60 ambassadors from various countries were present to experience the state’s vibrant culture.
The Prime Minister also spoke about his visit to Kaziranga National Park, where he highlighted its biodiversity and the recent recognition of Assamese as a classical language. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed PM Modi, expressing gratitude for his visit. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha described the event as mesmerizing, praising the energy of the performers.
The Jhumoir dance, an integral part of Assam’s tea garden workers and Adivasi community, dates back to the early 19th century. It symbolizes the joy and camaraderie among workers after a long day of labor. The Assam government has announced financial support for the artists and tea gardens to promote this traditional dance form.
