New Delhi:
In a significant development in the Middle East, India has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking a potential end to the 15-month-long war in Gaza. This deal, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, is set to take effect on January 19, just days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who had warned Hamas of severe consequences if hostages were not released.
The conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis, has led to devastating consequences. Israel’s retaliatory strikes have caused over 46,000 Palestinian deaths and significant destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure, displacing nearly 90% of its population.
The ceasefire deal is structured into three phases, aiming to bring a sustainable calm to the region. The initial phase, which will last six weeks, involves the release of 33 Israeli hostages by Hamas, including women, children, and men above 50 years of age. In exchange, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners. This phase also includes a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from densely populated areas of Gaza to facilitate the prisoner exchange and the return of displaced individuals.
The second phase, beginning on the 16th day of the initial phase, will focus on the release of all remaining hostages and the negotiation of a permanent ceasefire. This phase will also see the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, paving the way for a lasting peace.
The final phase will center on humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts. International mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations, will oversee the return of deceased individuals to their families and the restoration of Gaza. This phase is crucial for providing a safe and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
The agreement is a significant step towards addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. India has consistently called for the release of all hostages, a ceasefire, and a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed hope that this development would lead to a safe and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
The international community, particularly the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, played a pivotal role in brokering this deal after months of negotiations. The involvement of these mediators ensures that the agreement will be effectively implemented, bringing much-needed relief to the people of Gaza.
The conflict in Gaza has been one of the most devastating in recent history, with over 46,000 Palestinian deaths and widespread destruction. India, with its strong strategic ties with Israel and significant diplomatic relations with Arab states, has been keenly watching the developments. India’s reaction reflects its balanced approach, emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid while advocating for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.
