VASCO: As election fever heats up, the Dabolim constituency is getting ready to witness a four-way fight.
Although there are strong candidates against the BJP’S Mauvin Godinho, Godinho seems to have the upper hand considering his aggressive model of development work and personal rapport with the people concerned in panchayat areas Dabolim constituency.
BJP candidate Mauvin Godinho who was a Transport, Panchayat minister in the BJP government, has remained in the limelight for the decisions which are synonymous with the “taking the bull by its horns”, be it a “Bhumiputra- Bhumiadhikarini” bill, Taxi meters, his support to three linear projects, backing to the non-Goan candidate in Zuarinagar and so on.
It is certain that in the village panchayats of Bogmalo-Chicolna, part of the New Vaddem and Chicalim panchayat area, he has garnered the support of the locals, the creamy layer population which lives in the big villas and multi-storey buildings. Godinho has been known for his aggressive and robust way of bringing developmental projects to his constituency.
He also shares a good rapport with locals and has also managed to bring Union ministers into his constituency. Godinho brings in a minister’s power has tried to bring several public utility works in his constituency. But it is equally true that Godinho has remained encircled with controversies.
Besides Godinho, new Congress entrant Capt. Viriato Fernandes, who is highly qualified and has a defence background, has garnered some support and popularity in the Chicalim and nearby areas, especially minority communities.
Viriato Fernandes, who was with the Goencho Avaaz group and was spearheading several agitations against the three linear projects, coal pollution etc. with the help of youths and other like-minded people, recently joined Congress and emphasized that he entered politics to change bad politics and set things right in terms of bringing good governance.
On the other hand, AAP’S Premanand (Babu) Nanoskar seems to be more confident this time as he has now moved from the local to a national political party. In the last election, Babu Nanoskar contested on Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and lost against BJP’s Mauvin, yet he has not given up and has decided to contest on an AAP ticket this time.
Also, Jose Philip D’Souza, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Goa chief contesting from Dabolim, still feels that he has got a stronghold in the Dabolim constituency as he had some years ago.
D’Souza continuously emphasized the alliance with the like-minded political parties to defeat BJP in this election. But to his disappointment, no favourable development was seen in the recent past. He has now decided to take the fight alone and contest to take on the BJP’S Godinho in Dabolim.
During the last assembly election in 2017, Mauvin Godinho of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat by defeating Premanand Nanoskar from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak with a margin of 2494 votes.
Godinho got 7234 votes, and Nanoskar secured 4740 votes.
Vinay, a local from Dabolim on anonymity, said that things have changed a lot, and people need the MLA who will listen to them and undertake work swiftly. There are likely chances that this time too, Godinho will win.
Stephanie Lucas from Chicalim said the situation in the Dabolim constituency is different this time. We cannot predict who will win since there has been a mixed mood of the people. Several political parties are contesting, so no one can determine who will win.
