New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his visit to Mauritius, it marked a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship between the two nations. The trip, which coincided with Mauritius’s National Day celebrations, underscored the deep historical, cultural, and strategic ties that bind India and Mauritius together. With PM Modi as the chief guest at these celebrations, the visit aimed to usher in a new era of cooperation, building on the shared values of democracy and mutual trust that have long characterized their partnership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius on March 11-12, 2025, was at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The primary purpose of the visit was to attend Mauritius’s National Day celebrations as the chief guest. The event was marked by a grand display of military cooperation, with a contingent of Indian armed forces, an Indian Navy warship, and the Akash Ganga skydiving team participating in the festivities.
India and Mauritius enjoy a robust partnership in maritime security, development, and people-to-people ties. This visit was designed to enhance bilateral cooperation across all sectors, further strengthening the enduring friendship between the two nations. Economically, India is among Mauritius’s largest trading partners, while Mauritius was the second-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India for the fiscal year 2023-24.
The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA), signed in February 2021, represents a significant milestone in their economic relationship. This agreement not only deepens trade ties but also underscores the strategic importance of their partnership in the Indian Ocean region.
