New Delhi: India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill has said that lifting the trophy at the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup remains the ultimate target for the Indian team after narrowly missing out on the title in the previous edition.
Speaking during the BCCI Naman Awards broadcast on Star Sports, Gill reflected on India’s journey in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Despite a dominant run that included ten consecutive victories, India lost the final to Australia national cricket team, a result that left the team determined to return stronger.
Gill said the memory of coming close to the title continues to motivate the players as they prepare for another opportunity at the next World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa along with other African venues. According to him, winning a World Cup in any format remains the highest aspiration for the team.
Meanwhile, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav also spoke about the lingering disappointment of the 2023 final, saying he would choose to replay that match and change the result if given the chance.
Suryakumar noted that India’s triumph at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup acted as a turning point for Indian cricket. The victory, he said, sparked a wave of success across various Indian teams, including the women’s side winning the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence about India’s prospects in upcoming global events. The team hopes to continue its dominance by targeting a third consecutive title at the next T20 World Cup and also aims for success when cricket makes its Olympic return at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Suryakumar also credited former head coach Rahul Dravid and current coach Gautam Gambhir for fostering a culture of trust and belief within the team, emphasising the importance of backing players consistently through challenging phases.
