PERNEM: Pernem police have registered a case of cheating following a complaint lodged by Vithal Arolkar (65), a self-employed resident of Kiranpani, Palyem in Pernem.
As per the complaint, the incident dates back to February 20 at around 11 am, when the accused, identified as Santosh Malkar, a resident of Mangaon, Maharashtra, allegedly induced the complainant and his family members on the pretext of performing religious rituals to cure the illness of the complainant’s daughter.
During the course of the ritual, the complainant’s daughter reportedly placed her 40-gram mangalsutra, valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh, inside a steel tin as instructed. Police said the accused allegedly dishonestly removed the mangalsutra from the tin and replaced it with an empty container, while directing the family not to open it for 21 days as part of the ritual.
When the family later realised that the ornament was missing, they approached the police and filed a complaint.
An offence was registered on February 28 at 10.33 pm, and further investigation is being carried out by PSI Sarvesh Sawant.
