VASCO: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday flagged-in Indian Navy Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini in Goa as Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A returned home after successfully completing the ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama II’—a historic eight-month-long circumnavigation expedition.
Addressing the ceremony, Singh described the duo’s feat as the epitome of Nari Shakti, highlighting their resilience and courage in becoming the first Indians to achieve such a voyage in double-handed mode. The officers sailed 25,600 nautical miles, stopping at Fremantle (Australia), Lyttleton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falkland Islands), and Cape Town (South Africa).
Commending their effort, Singh said, “They have shown the world that they are the brave daughters of India. Not everyone can achieve what they have—this voyage is a testament to their grit, mental strength, and endurance.”
In a significant revelation, the Defence Minister also acknowledged the crucial role of women officers in India’s counter-terrorism operations during Operation Sindoor. “Women pilots and other female soldiers played a key part in the effective action taken in Pakistan and PoK,” he said.
Singh noted that with increased participation of women in the Armed Forces, they have consistently performed exceptionally across roles—from the heights of Siachen to the depths of the ocean. “Today, Sainik Schools are open to girls, and 17 women are passing out from the NDA this month,” he added.
Singh urged the two officers to document their experiences to inspire future generations, especially young women. He also recalled his recent virtual conversation with them, saying it had moved him deeply.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi praised the duo for their perseverance and hailed their journey as a tribute to India’s rich maritime legacy. “This expedition is a strong statement of Indian Navy’s spirit and national maritime consciousness,” he remarked.
A photo essay book titled ‘Breaking Waves, Making History’ chronicling the voyage was released on the occasion, offering insights into the challenges and triumphs of life at sea.
The event was attended by senior naval officials, family members of the officers, Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), Goa’s Chief Secretary Dr V Candavelou, and DG Armed Forces Medical Services Vice Admiral Arti Sarin.
Navika Sagar Parikrama II was flagged off from INS Mandovi in Goa on October 2, 2024. The first edition, completed by a six-member women crew, took place in 2017-18.
