PANAJI: Work on the proposed Mirabag Bhandara project will be put on hold for at least two to four months, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar announced today.
He added that a final decision on the project will be made after discussions with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
Shirodkar said the temporary suspension aligns with the upcoming monsoon season and stressed that public opinion will play a key role in determining the project’s future.
“If people are satisfied with the pause, I am also satisfied. We will take a final call after consulting the Chief Minister,” he noted.
The announcement comes amid protests by local residents, who have been opposing the project for over a month.
Their agitation intensified after the Water Resources Department presented the project at a public meeting in Sanvordem last Saturday.
Hundreds of villagers from Sanguem, Curchorem, and Sanvordem attended the meeting, voicing strong objections.
They demanded that written minutes of the session be provided along with a formal assurance from the government within two days that the project would be scrapped, warning that failure to do so would result in an escalation of their protests.
