VASCO: In a major infrastructure boost for the port town, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Monday announced that work on the new railway underpass near Tanya Hotel will commence on November 17. The MLA, along with Dy Collector Bhagwant Karmali and officials from the PWD, Fire, Railways, and Traffic departments, conducted a joint inspection of the project site to finalise plans for the upcoming work.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Salkar said the new underpass and accompanying road widening works will greatly ease traffic movement and improve emergency access to surrounding localities. “This is a very important development for the area. The existing underpass is too low for heavy vehicles, which means ambulances and fire tenders cannot pass through. During emergencies, they are forced to take a longer route, causing at least a half-hour delay. The new underpass will solve this long-standing problem,” Salkar said.
He added that the project will not only create a new underpass but also widen the Mangor road into a four-lane stretch. “We are also taking up the widening of the existing road that connects the bridge to Mangor. Along the way, we will replace four old Portuguese-era culverts that are no longer functional and build four new ones to ensure proper rainwater drainage,” he said.
Salkar appealed for public cooperation during the construction phase. “There may be temporary inconvenience as sewerage pipeline work and road diversions will be taken up simultaneously. I request the public to bear with us for about two months — these efforts are for long-term convenience and safety,” he added.
Highlighting the area’s future transformation, Salkar said, “With the beautifully developed Tanya Lake on one side and the upcoming Sports City complex on the other, this entire stretch will soon give Vasco a new, modern face.”
