New Delhi: Top-order batter KL Rahul is eyeing a return to India’s T20I squad with hopes of featuring in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, set to be hosted on home soil. Having missed the previous edition, which India won, Rahul is determined to make his mark this time around.
The 32-year-old last played a T20 international during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where India exited in the semifinals after a defeat to England. Since then, Rahul has been out of India’s T20 setup, but a strong showing in the IPL 2025 has reignited talks of a comeback. Representing Delhi Capitals, Rahul has amassed 539 runs at a strike rate of 149.72, showcasing both form and intent.
“Yes, I want to get back in the T20 team and the World Cup is in my mind, but for now it’s just about enjoying how I’m playing,” Rahul told Sky Sports.
Reflecting on his journey, Rahul highlighted his adaptability and willingness to take on any role for the team, rather than lobbying for specific positions. “If you look at my career, I haven’t really had the luxury to choose roles. I’ve always believed in adjusting to what the team needs rather than asking for a particular spot,” he said.
Throughout his career, Rahul has featured in various roles, from opening the innings to batting in the middle order, even as low as No. 7. He believes that clarity from the team management is key to his preparation and performance.
“When the coaches, selectors, or captain tell me, ‘This is your role’ — whether it’s opening, No. 5 or No. 6 — that clarity helps me focus and adjust my game accordingly,” Rahul added.
With his current form and renewed hunger, Rahul is making a strong case for his return. As India looks to defend their T20 World Cup title next year, Rahul’s versatility and experience could be valuable assets for the squad
