Panaji: As the world rapidly evolves, it’s crucial to honour the wisdom of those who have witnessed and contributed to decades of change. World Senior Citizen Day, observed on August 21, is a moment to recognize the invaluable contributions of our older generation and address the challenges they face in an increasingly digital world.
In Goa, the Department of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communications (DITE&C) has taken significant steps to bridge this gap with the Gramin Mitra Yojana. This initiative is designed to enhance the accessibility, transparency, and cost-efficiency of government services for all, especially rural residents and senior citizens.
The Gramin Mitra Yojana brings essential government services directly to citizens’ doorsteps, whether it’s acquiring important documents like birth or income certificates or accessing various welfare schemes. With over 190 Gramin Mitras established across all panchayats and urban municipalities, more than 1,000 individuals have already benefited from the scheme. For just Rs. 50, over 200 essential services are delivered to your doorstep, making it easier for all citizens, especially seniors, to access these services without the burden of long-distance travel. This initiative not only modernizes public service delivery but also strengthens socio-economic development in rural Goa, setting a new standard for inclusive e-governance.
Moreover, the scheme isn’t just about making services accessible- it’s about ensuring that senior citizens are not left behind in the digital age. The dedicated call centre, operating from 8 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week, offers a lifeline to many, providing support and guidance.
This World Senior Citizen Day, as we honour the contributions of our elders, it’s essential to highlight how this initiative is enhancing their lives, promoting digital literacy, and ensuring they enjoy their golden years with dignity. For assistance, they can call the helpline at 14471 to access the benefits of this transformative scheme.
