BICHOLIM: Officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) in Dicholi have urged citizens to stop using plastic and properly dispose of plastic waste to prevent it from being dumped into drains.
This appeal comes as the department continues its efforts to remove silt from the Dicholi river, with plastic waste identified as a major contributor to increased flooding risks during the monsoon season.
On Friday, WRD officials, including Chief Engineer Ankush Gaonkar, Assistant Engineer Shailesh Pokale, and Naresh Pokale, visited the river site to assess the progress of the silt removal work.
They noted that unseasonal rains had posed challenges but assured that efforts were proceeding swiftly.
To speed up the removal process, the department has deployed a special amphibian JCB to access hard-to-reach areas of the river.
Officials remain committed to completing the work before heavy rains set in and are calling for public cooperation to ensure clean and functional drainage systems.
