PANAJI: In light of increasing temperatures, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has issued a strong advisory urging the public to refrain from approaching or entering irrigation canals across the state.
The department noted a disturbing trend of individuals, especially during peak heat hours, entering government canals for bathing or using canal inspection paths as regular thoroughfares.
Officials warn that such actions not only violate safety norms but also pose a significant risk of drowning and other accidents.
“To avoid any unforeseen mishaps, we urge citizens not to approach canals under any circumstances,” a WRD spokesperson stated. The department emphasized that canal banks and inspection routes are not designed for public use and must not be treated as recreational or travel paths.
The WRD has requested local administrations and law enforcement agencies to assist in spreading awareness and ensuring compliance to prevent any tragic incidents.
