VELSAO: The Water Resources Department (WRD) has decided to repair the damaged seating arrangement and restore the washed-away steps at Velsao Beach, following sand erosion. The decision was made after a joint inspection led by Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, along with WRD officials on Saturday. The inspection was initiated based on concerns raised by social worker Roquezinho D’Souza regarding the difficulties faced by senior citizens in accessing the beach.
The WRD officials assessed the extent of the damage to the seating area, which had developed cracks and posed a danger to those using it. MLA Anton Vas assured that immediate action would be taken to restore both the seating arrangement and the beach access, especially for senior citizens.
Social worker Roquezinho D’Souza, speaking to the media, expressed the urgency of the situation
“Senior citizens of Velsao have been facing difficulties accessing the beach due to the missing steps that were washed away by sand erosion. Many have fallen and injured themselves. This issue has been pending for a long time. The seating arrangement is damaged and dangerous. I approached MLA Anton Vas because the ward panch members have not taken action, and thankfully, he agreed to inspect the site.”Said DSouza
“This seating arrangement and access are vital for senior citizens who frequently visit this beautiful beach. The WRD has assured us that immediate steps will be taken to restore everything.”added D’Souza
Cortalim MLA Anton Vas also acknowledged the urgency of the situation
“The steps from the bandstand to the beach have been washed away due to erosion, making it extremely difficult for senior citizens to access the beach. After visiting the site, I directed WRD officials to repair the steps, construct a ramp for easier access, and restore the seating arrangement using concrete and marble for durability.”
Vas further assured the public that the restoration would be completed within the next fifteen days
“The WRD has given this project top priority and will start work immediately. The steps, ramp, and seating arrangement will be restored, ensuring safe access to the beach for all, especially our senior citizens.” Said Vas
The restoration efforts are expected to bring much-needed relief to the local community, particularly the elderly, who frequently visit the scenic Velsao Beach.
