CANACONA – In yet another mishap that could trigger a public uprising against the PWD for I’ll need maintenance of NH-66 road, a Karnataka registration truck fell off the narrow Highway section at Gulem early Wednesday morning.
According to sources, the Truck bearing no. KA52 B3317, loaded with Cement bags headed towards Margao, fell off the road after slightly steering on the left side to give sufficient road space to another oncoming truck. It just went off as the road itself gave away and fell on its side with a bang. However, the driver and cleaner escaped without many injuries even as the 14- tyre truck suffered damage.
Locals, however, heard bitterly complaining of continuous mishaps taking place in the area due to the narrow road.
‘It more than five such mishaps were loaded and unloaded trucks that fell off the road in the Gulem area, and almost all have fallen because of the narrow condition of the Highway. The entire Gulem section, including the Karmalghat slope, has become a nightmare to motorists, and driving in this highway section has become a challenging task, especially for the heavy vehicles so often falling prey to mishaps all because of road conditions.’, said Sunay Gaonkar.
Residents were also sceptical to say that some of the social activists should indeed come forward and file complaints against the PWD and the government for failing to improve the Highway road as far as its width is concerned, as only announcements are being made to improve. Still, in reality, nothing is being done to widen the road while many mishaps are taking place, sometimes causing loss of lives and properties.
