New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent statements on religious harmony and political rivals have stirred discussions across India. In a wide-ranging interview with ANI on March 26, 2025, the saffron-clad leader addressed issues of communal safety, historical perspectives, and political dynamics in the country’s most populous state.
Adityanath asserted that Uttar Pradesh has maintained communal peace since the BJP came to power in 2017. He emphasized that the safety of Muslims is intrinsically linked to the safety of Hindus in the state. “In Uttar Pradesh, Muslims are the safest when Hindus are safe,” he stated, highlighting the absence of communal riots in recent years.
The Chief Minister’s comments on religious demographics raised eyebrows when he questioned the safety of Hindu minorities in Muslim-majority areas. Drawing comparisons to neighboring countries, Adityanath said, “A Muslim family is safest among 100 Hindu families. But can 50 Hindus be safe among 100 Muslim families? Bangladesh is an example.”
Addressing historical and cultural aspects, Adityanath described Sanatan Dharma as the world’s oldest religion, asserting that Hindu rulers have never used force to establish dominion over others. He also touched upon controversial topics such as the Ayodhya issue and the ongoing Mathura mosque dispute, stating that the government is following court orders in these matters.
In a pointed remark about political opposition, Adityanath referred to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a “specimen” that inadvertently benefits the BJP. He criticized Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, calling it “Bharat Todo Abhiyan” (India Breaking Campaign), and accused the Congress of failing to address issues like triple talaq and infrastructure development.
The Chief Minister’s statements reflect the complex interplay of religion, politics, and governance in Uttar Pradesh, showcasing the BJP’s stance on various contentious issues while emphasizing the party’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.
