Lucknow: In the early hours of January 29, a tragic stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, claiming the lives of at least 30 people and injuring 60 others. Despite the severity of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ensured that it was not excessively publicized to prevent widespread panic among the millions of devotees present. The event, which drew over 66 crore pilgrims, was a logistical challenge due to its massive scale and the need for precise crowd management.
Adityanath highlighted the importance of effective crisis management during such large-scale events. He personally intervened to delay the ritualistic ‘Amrit Snan’ (holy dip) to manage the situation, ensuring that officials closely monitored the crowd and evacuated the Sangam area by noon. The ‘snan’ resumed by 2:30 PM, demonstrating the administration’s ability to respond swiftly and maintain order.
The Maha Kumbh, held once every 12 years, is a significant religious event that attracts pilgrims worldwide. This year’s event saw unprecedented attendance, surpassing all previous records. Adityanath emphasized the economic benefits of such events, noting that they provide employment opportunities and support various businesses.
