New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir has revealed that his appointment as head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team came as a major surprise, recalling how Jay Shah personally persuaded him to accept the role despite his initial hesitation.
Gambhir took charge of the national team in July 2024 following the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure. While his time as head coach has included notable success with two ICC titles, it has also seen difficult moments, including disappointing home series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa.
The former India opener admitted that he had not expected to receive the offer and initially felt unprepared for such a high responsibility. According to Gambhir, the conversation that led to his appointment happened during the Indian Premier League while Kolkata Knight Riders were preparing for a match against Mumbai Indians in Mumbai.
He recalled receiving an early morning call from Jay Shah at the team hotel, where the former BCCI secretary informed him that he had an important offer. During the conversation, Shah told him that he had to take up the position of India’s head coach and that refusing the opportunity was not an option.
Gambhir said the proposal took him by surprise because he had never served as a head coach before. Throughout his post playing career, he had worked mainly as a mentor with different teams, making the offer even more unexpected. Despite the uncertainty, he described the chance to guide the Indian team as a privilege and a rare opportunity for any former cricketer to once again contribute to the national side.
Before accepting the role, Gambhir discussed the decision with his family, including his wife Natasha. He later expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, acknowledging the responsibility of handling such a demanding and high profile position.
Gambhir also revealed that Shah remained supportive during challenging periods of his tenure. After India suffered tough home defeats, he received encouraging calls reminding him to stay strong. He said the support during difficult moments was something he would always remember and deeply appreciate.
