New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has tightened its policy against the use of “loose FASTags”—those not properly affixed to vehicle windscreens—to streamline toll collection and prevent misuse. Vehicle owners using “tag-in-hand” FASTags now risk having their tags blacklisted, a move that could significantly impact toll plaza operations across the country.
The new directive comes as part of preparations for upcoming systems such as the Annual Pass and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, aimed at creating a more efficient and seamless tolling experience. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, improperly installed FASTags are causing lane congestion, false chargebacks, and misuse in closed-loop toll systems—prompting this crackdown.
With over 98% adoption of FASTags nationwide, NHAI believes enforcing proper usage will reduce delays and enhance convenience for all National Highway users.
Toll Collection Agencies and Concessionaires have been instructed to report non-compliant FASTags to a dedicated email ID set up by NHAI. Once reported, such tags may be blacklisted or hotlisted immediately, restricting their use until compliance is ensured.
This policy is expected to have minimal impact on law-abiding users, but those who continue to misuse or improperly display FASTags may face penalties or travel disruptions. For most drivers, the move promises faster toll payments and shorter wait times at plazas.
To stay compliant, users should:
• Properly Fix FASTag: Affix it securely to the inside of the windscreen.
• Update KYC Details: Complete and regularly update Know Your Customer (KYC) details with your FASTag provider.
• Maintain Adequate Balance: Ensure your FASTag account has enough funds to cover toll charges.
• Monitor Notifications: Stay alert for updates or warnings from your FASTag provider or issuing bank.
The Ministry highlighted that “tag-in-hand” usage undermines the effectiveness of electronic tolling and causes disruptions that affect all highway users. This initiative is aimed at eliminating these loopholes and delivering a smoother, more reliable tolling experience.
By enforcing proper usage, the NHAI hopes to enhance the overall efficiency of India’s toll system, ensuring faster and more comfortable journeys for everyone on the road.
