QUEPEM: A 23-year-old youth from Balli, Quepem, died while undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, following a river diving incident.
According to police, a wireless message was received from GMC on March 20, 2026, informing about the death of Nitin Gaonkar (23). During enquiry, family members stated that the deceased had gone swimming at Konimol in Balli, Quepem.
While swimming, he reportedly jumped into the river and sustained serious injuries to his head and neck. He was immediately shifted to GMC Bambolim for treatment, where he later succumbed.
Police conducted an inquest panchanama, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination. The autopsy conducted by the police surgeon certified the cause of death as “bilateral consolidation of lungs in a person undergoing treatment for cervical spine injury.”
The body was later handed over to the family for final rites.
