CANACONA: ZICO Boys Verna got the better of SFX Boys, Bhatpal, by a solitary goal to win the Edwin Cardozo Memorial All Goa 7-a-side Football Tournament.
Zico Boys won the Trophy and a purse of rupees 50,000/- in cash, while SFX Bhatpal had to be content with a smaller trophy and cash purse of Rs.30,000/-. After a barren first –half, the goal was scored by Abhishek in the second half for Zico boys to come out with flying colours.
Organised by SFX Sports Club, Bhatpal, a total of 16 teams vied for honours for the two days on Sunday and Monday at Devabhaga- Grounds, Canacona.
The trophies and awards were handed over at the hands of the chief guest of the finals, Fr. Freddy St.Francis Xavier Church, Bhatpal and the two daughters of the late Edwin Cardozo.
Earlier, while 16 teams fought it out, both the semi-finals were decided in the tie-breakers; after the normal time, teams were locked in equal goals in both matches.
In the first semi-final, Agonda boys were ousted by Zico Boys, Verna, in a tiebreaker (2-0) after playing a 1-1 draw in the normal time. In the second semis, SFX Boys, Bhatpal got the better of Shrusti Boys by 3-2 goals in a tiebreaker after being held by a 2-2 draw in the normal field play.
Mohammed of Zico Boys is adjudged as the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament for some of his splendid Saves and given a special award at the hands of a family member of the late Edwin Cardoz.
Munna of SFX Boys Bhatpal won the best player of the tournament award.
