CANACONA: Stating a marginal increase of adding new cultivation areas has given a huge agricultural boost to the taluka, Canacona ZAO informed over 300 ha is undergoing Kharif Paddy Cultivation in Canacona.

Incidentally, Canacona taluka predominantly agriculture as the main occupation of the people continue to have vast tracts of paddy fields lying dormant for decades. However, many people, especially youngsters who have turned away from the green revolution to white-coloured jobs, are slowly showing interest in cultivating fields lying fallow.
“Yes, due to the introduction of various convincing schemes and facilities promoted by the government, not only seasoned farmers but also youths who have abandoned their forefathers’ occupation are returning back to the fields”, he said.
Besides, 150 Ha of areas are annually taken up for cultivation of vegetables and also increasing with many joining in during Kharif season.
According to Naikgaunkar, Canacona, one of the important agricultural hubs of the State, has 3438 farmers registered under Krishi Card., while 1650 of these farmers are under Prime Minister Kisan Yojana.
During the Kharif period, most of the farmers preferred the Jaya, Jyoti and Karjat varieties of paddy seedlings, while Goa Dhan 3 and Ratnagiri 6 were the new varieties preferred by some farmers.
Incidentally, compared to other taluka, farmers in Canacona taluka begin Nursery Cultivation only after the arrival of full-blown monsoon rains, and sometimes transplantation of paddy stems/seedlings is carried out till mid-August.
Presently, a lot of paddies is still under nursery plantation while transportation is also carried out in a number of paddy fields of Canacona.
