PANAJI: The Directorate of Transport today informed that Goa witnessed 274 accidents in the month of March.
Also a total 1447 Challans were issued by Transport Authorities in the month of March 2022.
As per the report 274 road accidents out of which 23 were Fatal Accidents (North Goa – 07 and South Goa – 16), 17 Grievous Accidents (North Goa – 11 and South Goa – 06), 45 Minor Accidents (North Goa – 22 and South Goa – 23) and 189 Non – Injury Accidents (North Goa – 102 and South Goa –87).
The total number of persons who lost their lives in road accidents are 24 (North Goa – 07 and South Goa – 17), 11 Riders, 5 P/Riders, 1 Driver and 7 Pedestrian lost their lives in these accidents. 25 people were Grievously Injured (North – 13 and South – 12) while 74 persons suffered Minor Injuries (North – 35, South – 39).
India recorded 3,74,397 accidental deaths in 2020 with road crashes constituting over 35 per cent of such fatalities, according to government data. The number of accidental deaths in 2020 was, however, lower than 2019 when the figure stood at 4,21,104, the annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showed.
According to the NCRB, 43.6 per cent of victims of road accidents were riders of two-wheelers, followed by cars, trucks or lorries and buses accounting for 13.2 per cent, 12.8 per cent and 3.1 per cent of deaths due to road accidents, respectively.
Dangerous or careless driving or overtaking contributed to 24.3 per cent of road accidents which led to 35,219 deaths and 77,067 people being injured, it added.
