PANAJI: Separate gambling raids in Panaji, Porvorim, and Colvale resulted in the arrest of three people.
The accused, Parana Rikate, 24, of Betim, was apprehended while taking gambling bets from the public in an open area and handing out slips with numerical values during the first raid, which happened on Tuesday night at the Tinto, Nerul market. The police confiscated Rs 2,360 from him.
Rupesh Naik, a 45-year-old Thivim, Bardez resident, was arrested in another raid at Shantadurga Garage in Madel, Thivim, as he was taking money from everyone playing a game of chance, also referred to as the “number game,” in a public setting. The cops confiscated various denominations of Rs 1,810 in addition to other gambling-related items.
Laxman Kumatagi, a 28-year-old Taleigao resident, was apprehended while taking wagers on numerical values from the general public during the third raid conducted by the Panaji police at Taleigao Bandh. In addition to other gambling equipment, the police confiscated Rs 1,130 in various currencies from his hands.
The Prevention of Public Gambling Act has led to the arrest and charging of all three of them.
