ASSORNA: Three people, including a local drug dealer, were apprehended by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) for allegedly selling 13 kg of marijuana for Rs 13 lakh, breaking up another drug ring.
Mervyn Fernandes, a resident of Assagao, and Jharkhand residents Shashikant Kumar Gupta and Guddu Kumar Bhuiya were apprehended during the late-night raid in Assonora.
Fernandes, according to ANC, is a repeat offender with past convictions under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The Bhuntar Police Station in Himachal Pradesh made the initial arrest of Fernandes in 2018 for having commercial amounts of charas in his hands.
According to preliminary investigations, Fernandes obtained the contraband from Jharkhand, while the other two suspects arrived in Goa with a shipment weighing 10 kg. Fernandes was discovered carrying the final 3 kilos, according to ANC.
The ANC detectives stated that since receiving a tip on an interstate marijuana smuggling ring, they had been working on this case for two weeks.
The defendants have been placed under arrest by the police pending more inquiry. With six arrests and the recovery of drugs valued at around Rs 22 lakh, this is the ANC’s fourth raid in the last seven days.
