Panaji: During the monsoon session of the Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Sanjay Singh gave a special mention notice to resume mining operations in Goa. In his notice, Singh stated that two-third of the state’s employment is directly or indirectly dependent on mining. He mentioned that the tourism sector had already taken a hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the mining ban has further exacerbated the situation and brought the people of the state to the brink of starvation and made life very difficult for the citizens of Goa.
The AAP MP added that this ban on mining has led to an immeasurable loss to the state’s revenue which depicts a failure of the state and the Centre’s policies. Singh pointed out the fact that the mining industry is an unorganized industry, and its closure has led the workers and their families to poverty traps. He further mentioned that the government is misleading the citizens of the state by luring them under false pretexts of “corporation”.
Through his notice, Sanjay Singh urged the government to investigate the matter and resume mining operations in the state at the earliest. The issue was raised due to the prolonged mining ban in Goa since 2018 which has pushed 3 lakh people into poverty and hunger.
