PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed the House that 44 government primary schools (GPSs) had closed since 2020 because there were no students enrolled.
He stated that 11 of the 44 schools were closed in 2020–21, 8 in 2021–22, 11 in 2022–23, and 14 in 2023–24.
Sawant stated that even though the government did not carry out any research to determine the causes of zero or low student enrollment in government primary schools, the newly established Vidya Samiksha Kendra is anticipated to monitor the students and offer comprehensive information that will be utilized to identify the barriers preventing parents from enrolling their children in these kinds of schools.
But in response to a question about the actions the government has taken to boost enrollment since 2020, Sawant stated that the government has hired highly qualified teachers who do their best to teach the curriculum.
“The State Council for Education, Research and Training and the District Institute of Education and Training provide regular training and other capacity building training to teachers in government schools,” he said.
Additionally, the government is always putting new infrastructure in schools and introducing programs like the Mid-day Meal Scheme (PM-POSHAN), which provides free textbooks, notebooks, and school supplies.
Uniforms and raincoats, Goa Education Development Corporation (GEDC)-provided “yog” education, value education, and enhanced civic engagement, he said.
