Hyderabad: At least 55 residents from flood-prone areas of Hyderabad were evacuated after heavy rainfall caused a surge in the Musi River, prompting authorities to release nearly 25,000 cusecs of water from the city’s twin reservoirs, Himayatsagar and Osmansagar. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) carried out evacuations in localities near Shivaji Bridge and Chaderghat to ensure the safety of affected residents.
The city’s western and rapidly developing IT corridors, including Gachibowli, Hitech City, Madhapur, and Kondapur, were severely waterlogged, resulting in major traffic congestion. Overflow from the Himayatsagar reservoir inundated the Outer Ring Road (ORR) service roads, particularly around Exit 17, causing disruptions for commuters. Cyberabad Traffic Police advised drivers to avoid the affected service roads and issued a Work-from-Home advisory to IT companies to ease congestion on key transport routes.
Hyderabad’s historic Old City also faced intense flooding due to its narrow drainage systems. Areas around Charminar, Falaknuma, Malakpet, Bahadurpura, and Chandulal Baradari reported knee-deep water, making roads impassable and forcing traffic diversions. Central zones such as Nampally, Khairatabad, Mehdipatnam, and Lakdikapul continued to face severe waterlogging, highlighting concerns over the city’s aging civic infrastructure.
In recent weeks, heavy rainfall has led to multiple rain-related casualties across the city, including the death of a 26-year-old man who drowned in a flooded railway underpass at Balkampet.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Nirmal, Warangal, and Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri districts on September 27. The state government has instructed all emergency services, including GHMC, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), and Disaster Response Force (DRF), to remain on high alert to manage the compounded flood risk.
