“As per the India State of Forest report by Forest Survey of India (ISFR 2021) Green Cover of Goa is 2.488.21 Sq. Km, which is 67.21% of the Geographical area of State and includes Tree cover of 6.59% (244 Kms.),” said Rane.
He further said that; the loss of Trees/Forest cover due to biotic and abiotic reasons may lead to ecological degradation and can cause soil erosion, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, flooding, desertification, climate change etc.
“Compensatory afforestation is carried out to compensate the loss of ‘trees by trees’ and other direct and indirect benefits of the forest land which have been diverted for non-forestry use,” he added.
Rane said that the loss of trees may lead to ecological degradation; the Compensatory Afforestation in M.P. is proposed due to the nonavailability of suitable land in Goa, as per MOEFCC guidelines.
“The Compensatory afforestation in all the states, including Goa, is done as per the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. Guidelines regarding Compensatory afforestation,” the minister said.
