New Delhi: Air India has appointed renowned aviation executive Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, marking a significant leadership transition as the Tata Group-owned airline continues its ambitious transformation into a leading global carrier.
Gebremariam will take over from Campbell Wilson, who is set to step down next month after completing his tenure as the airline’s CEO and Managing Director.
Widely regarded as one of the aviation industry’s most accomplished leaders, Gebremariam is credited with transforming Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s largest, fastest growing and most profitable airline. During his leadership, the carrier significantly expanded its international network, improved operational efficiency and established itself as one of the world’s most successful airline groups.
His appointment comes at a crucial stage in Air India’s ongoing multi billion dollar transformation programme. Since returning to the Tata Group, the airline has been implementing sweeping reforms that include fleet modernisation, network expansion, service enhancements and operational restructuring to strengthen its position in the global aviation market.
Welcoming the appointment, Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said Gebremariam’s proven leadership and operational expertise make him the right choice to guide the airline through its next phase of growth.
He said Air India is now entering a critical execution phase, with a strong focus on expanding its global footprint and building a world class airline. Chandrasekaran added that Gebremariam’s experience in operational excellence, safety and airline hub development would play a key role in strengthening Air India’s international competitiveness and establishing it as a carrier that reflects India’s growing global presence.
Air India said the appointment followed a comprehensive global search conducted by a dedicated committee of the Board of Directors. The committee evaluated both internal and external candidates before selecting Gebremariam to lead the airline’s next chapter.
Under the new leadership, Air India is expected to continue pursuing its long term vision of becoming a premier global airline by enhancing connectivity, improving customer experience and delivering higher standards of operational excellence.
