Verna: A fatal accident was reported in Verna in the early hours of July 27, where a pillion rider lost his life and the motorcyclist sustained grievous injuries due to alleged drunk and negligent driving.
As per the state complaint filed by Head Constable Umesh Naik (HC 5127) of Verna Police Station, the incident occurred at around 1:50 AM when the accused rider, Ritesh Bediya, a resident of Verna and native of Jharkhand, was riding an HP Deluxe motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. Despite being intoxicated and aware of the dangers, Bediya chose to ride with a pillion rider, identified as Mithun Kumar Rawani, also from Verna and a native of Jharkhand.
While proceeding from Margao towards Verna Church, the motorcycle rider reportedly lost control of the vehicle near Union Bank, Verna, resulting in both rider and pillion falling to the road. Rawani succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while Bediya sustained grievous injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College, Bambolim.
Verna Police have registered a case against the rider for rash and negligent driving under the influence of alcohol, which led to the loss of life. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Carey Fernandes of Verna Police Station.
