PONDA: The state government has started efforts to produce quality athletes by preparing sports coaches.
Accordingly, the notification issued by Netaji Subhash National Institute, Patiala (Punjab), to train adept players in 25 different sports to become coaches. The Sports Department has notified a new financial assistance scheme on Thursday to enable participation in sports.
Under the scheme, six players from the open category and one each from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) can attend the institute.
However, there is no provision for OBCs in the scheme. Taking note of it, Union Minister Shripad Naik has demanded that OBCs should also get the benefit of the financial assistance scheme notified by the sports department for the training of sportsman
While congratulating the efforts of the government to produce quality sportspersons in the state by preparing sports coaches who provide scientific training, Mr Naik has demanded the inclusion of OBCs in this scheme.
Six players in the open category will be funded around Rs 9.82 lakh towards insect, travel expenses, accommodation and application fees. So, Sports Director Rohit Kadam has stated that the government will spend Rs 1.63 lakh each for SC and ST players.
As per the scheme, Coaching will be provided in Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing and Kayaking, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Rowing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Wushu and Yoga.
