In the early hours of Monday, an interstate trailer carrying large pipes toppled off NH66 at Barcem-Padi. The trailer, with registration no. AP39 TL7279, was en route to Margao when it overturned into the paddy fields. The driver mentioned that the narrow highway, lacking extra space beyond the paved road, was the cause of the accident.
Fortunately, there were no reported casualties in this incident. It’s worth noting that the area has gained a reputation for accidents, with numerous unreported incidents. Just a month ago, another trailer carrying new cars to a showroom in Goa met with a similar fate, damaging all four cars and the trailer.
Additionally, in September 2023, a loaded lorry truck transporting cashew nuts from Karnataka to Maharashtra overturned, causing the entire consignment to spill into the fields.
Furthermore, in September 2022, a Karnataka truck carrying fertilizer also veered off the same narrow portion of NH66, burying the cultivated paddy fields under the spilt fertilizer bags. This recurring pattern of accidents on this straight yet perilous stretch of road requires immediate attention and action to ensure the safety of all road users.
