VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council ( MMC ) Chairperson Girish Borker issued a strict warning to anyone trying to abuse a councillor, warning of very stringent action.
Borker was speaking to reporters after a council meeting convened to discuss and debate various important issues.
“I have been informed by Councillor Narayan Borker that he was abused with filthy words on the phone for doing his duty by a person who was selling fruits illegally in a parking area. This is unacceptable and will invite the most stringent action, no matter how good he may be connected politically to anyone. I will not take a second thought before initiating strict action on the person so that an example is set for others. The Municipality has already filed the police complaint in this regard and I am now publically issuing a warning to everyone because a councillor doing his rightful duty cannot be abused by anyone” said Borker.
Councillor Narayan Borkar said that he was abused on the phone with filthy words and that one municipal councillor was in connivance with the person abusing him.
“I am a part of the MMC market committee and our job is to ensure that there are no illegalities or encroachment in the market. I saw that one man was selling fruits illegally in a parking space near the markets. I requested him to move out from the area since he was blocking the parking space and causing congestion,” he said.
He added that the person however was found in the same place the next day and we informed the market committee who decided to go to the spot and talk to him. The committee warned him. and left and we also put the photo of the person in the Market Committee WhatsApp group which has our municipal staff and inspectors as members.
“I am not sure but someone went and told that person that I was against his business when I had done only my duty. The next day, a councillor approached me and said that I should not trouble that person and not come against his business to which I said that selling fruits in parking space was illegal,” he said.
“The vendor then called some person in our municipality and started abusing me with filthy words and this conversation was recorded and sent to me. I sent the recording to the Chairperson and I have now requested action against such behaviour by these illegal vendors and subsequently filed a police complaint. Today this vendor has just abused us and tomorrow, they could attack us. While there is no respect for the councillor, there is no safety as well and something has to be done in this regard,” said Borker.
