PANAJI: The second assistant account officer of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Panaji, Pankaj Kumar, was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch, on suspicion of bribery.
As you may remember, his accomplice, Assistant Account Officer Atul Wani, was taken into custody on Friday on suspicion of receiving a bribe to handle past-due payments for a contractor.
Kamlakant Chaturvedi, proprietor of Manpower Service at Socorro, had filed a complaint with the CBI on Wednesday, alleging that Kumar and his associates demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to clear seven months of unpaid invoices for services provided to the Income Tax Department.
Chaturvedi had approached the authorities after claiming that payments had been unfairly withheld for months. With Chaturvedi’s assistance, the CBI set up a trap and captured the two cops on Thursday in Patto.
According to Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988, a case has been filed against the two income tax department accounts officers. Arjun Kumar Maurya, DySP (CBI, ACB), is looking into the matter.
