MARGAO: The Office of the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Salcete, has issued a clarification stating that reports describing a “collapse” of a portion of an old building near Cine Lata, Margao are factually incorrect.
According to the clarification, the structure was removed as a preventive safety measure by the Collector, South Goa under Section 30(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, following a technical assessment by the Public Works Department (PWD), SD-2, Works Division VIII.
Officials stated that the building had dangerous hanging portions, posing a risk to public safety, and therefore required immediate intervention.
The administration clarified that the action was a controlled demolition carried out under the technical supervision of PWD Works Division VI, and hence cannot be termed a structural “collapse” as reported in some sections of the media.
It was further stated that staff of the Margao Municipal Council were deployed only for clearing debris generated during the lawful preventive operation.
The Office of the Deputy Collector and SDM, Salcete reiterated that the administration remains vigilant and committed to ensuring public safety in the region.
