PANAJI: Beef supply to Goa has been severely disrupted due to ongoing strikes in Karnataka and Maharashtra, compounded by alleged harassment of transporters by cow vigilante groups, the Qureshi Meat Traders Association of Goa said.
Association vice-president Sheikh Shabbir Bepari said the stoppage in supplies from the neighbouring states — Goa’s primary beef sources — has created a shortage in the local market. “Some beef is coming in from Andhra Pradesh, but it is insufficient to meet the demand,” he said.
Bepari alleged that truckers transporting beef are facing intimidation and obstruction from Gau Rakshaks, further discouraging suppliers from sending consignments to the State.
The disruption has led to fears of price hikes and supply crunch for consumers and traders if the situation persists.
