BICHOLIM: BJP workers from the Bicholim, Sanquelim and Mayem constituencies on Monday approached the Bicholim Police Station demanding legal action against social activist Swapnil Sherlekar over alleged remarks targeting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the Bharatiya Janata Party in connection with the Karapur mega project issue.
A large number of party workers and office-bearers gathered at the police station and submitted separate memorandums from all three constituencies to Police Inspector Vijay Rane, urging police to register a case against Sherlekar and initiate immediate action.
Among those present during the protest were North Goa BJP President Daya Karbotkar, Sanquelim Mandal President Rama Naik, Bicholim Mandal President Dr Kaustubh Patnekar, district member Mahesh Sawant, along with several local BJP leaders and workers.
According to BJP leaders, the complaint was filed over alleged objectionable and abusive remarks made against the Chief Minister and BJP workers. They also claimed that certain statements could create social unrest and disturb communal harmony.
Party representatives maintained that while social activists have the right to voice opposition and organise protests, personal attacks and abusive language against political leaders and party workers would not be tolerated.
The BJP workers further warned that if police failed to take prompt action in the matter, the party would intensify its agitation.
Police Inspector Vijay Rane met the delegation and assured them that the complaint would be examined and necessary action would be taken after an inquiry.
