CANACONA: Canacona BJP Mandal celebrated the birth and death anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder member of BJP, by planting saplings of fruit-bearing trees near various polling booths in the constituency.
Syama Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951 with the help of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was born on 6th July and had died on 23rd June. He was 51 years old when he died.
The fruit-bearing plantation drive was held near the polling booths in Loliem, Poinguinim, Cotigao and Gaondongrim panchayats areas.
The local MLA and Deputy speaker Isidore Fernandes while speaking during the plantation drive, emphasized the need to grow more trees to maintain the ecological balance of the environment as the trees that die due to old age, diseases and other natural calamities like floods and cyclones are to be replenished he said.
BJP state general secretary Sarvanad Bhagat while addressing those present, stressed maintaining ecological balance.
Those present during the drive were BJP South Goa vice president Mahesh Naik, BJP Mandal president Nandeep Bhagat, secretary Damodar Chari, Yuva morcha president Sanjeev Pagi, Yuva morcha executive members Ramchandra Naik Gaonkar and Prashal Dessai, ZP member Shobhna Velip, Sarpanch of Loliem-Polem panchayat Sachin Naik, sarpanch of Cotigao Daya Gaonkar, sarpanch of Gaondongrem Ms Suman Gaonkar, deputy sarpanch of Poiguinim panchayat Ms Elda Barretto, councillor Shubam Komarpant, panch members and other BJP karyakartas.
