CANACONA: With seasonal rains racing towards a century mark, Canacona ‘s Lifeline Chapoli Dam began to overflow from its spillway and also activating the Chapoli rivulet on Thursday evening.
According to WRD sources, Chapoli dam which has raced fast paced within the few days of delayed Monsoon rains, and was filled upto 38.35 RL only on Wednesday, attained the storage of 1127.21 ham and began to overflow as the reduced level rose to 38.80 RL (Reduced Level) at about 4.30 pm on Thursday evening. The dam however stops over-flowing when the reduced level goes below 38.75 RL.
Incidentally, with a pounding of over 92 mm of rainfall since morning and seasonal rainfall of 2411 mm was recorded the dam began to overflow at its Spillway.
With the overflows, the Chapoli rivulet is activated rising the water-level in the Devabhaga- Palolem river further down.
Chapoli Dam is the only source of irrigation for nearly 50% of paddy, sugarcane and other cultivations in the taluka and cater to the water needs of over 70% of the taluka for domestic purpose.
With the earliest at June itself (During its first year of commissioning), Chapoli dam has a history of attaining water in its capacity as late as September month, is also known to get its Reservoir full after the taluka receives seasonal rains of over 100 inches.
