PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the Legislative Assembly to recover Rs 350 crore pending dues from land-based casinos after serious concerns raised by the Opposition.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao informed the assembly that several casinos have not paid ₹340 crore in revenues to the government, which have been pending for years.
“₹100 under dispute with ₹250 crore outstanding. Why is the department selectively targeting the common man?” questioned Alemao
Alemao also said as to why isn’t the revenue being collected from casinos? Will the government seal the casinos if they are not paying?.
With this, the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed the House that government has already issued notices to the casinos, and the collection of revenues is underway.
“We have collected revenue for this year. We will ensure 100% recovery after the cases are closed. Whatever is possible, we will collect before March 31” Sawant informed
LoP also said that Casinos, advertising, and the roadways surrounding the airport all display CSR initiatives.
“Goa used to be famed for its sun, sand, and sea, but now that it has casinos, all it is is gaming. Casinos operate without authorization under the live gambling law. Why does the gaming commissioner not have a full-time position?” LoP Yuri
“My government did not start casinos. Casinos are permitted to operate under the gambling regulations. Permission for live gambling has not been granted,” he added
Sawant also said that his department carries out routine inspections, and we take appropriate action, including suspending licenses in response to complaints.
