New Delhi: Sam Altman has revealed that Indian users have generated more than one billion images using OpenAI’s latest image creation tool, ChatGPT Images 2.0, highlighting the country’s growing appetite for generative artificial intelligence.
Sharing the milestone on X, Altman said the feature had seen extraordinary adoption in India, describing the response as “awesome to see.” The achievement comes just weeks after the upgraded image generation system was launched globally in April.
The new tool has rapidly become popular across Indian social media platforms, where users are creating everything from anime inspired portraits and cinematic profile pictures to fantasy themed artwork, stylised avatars and AI enhanced professional headshots. The surge has been especially visible on platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram, where creators and professionals are increasingly experimenting with AI driven visuals.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Images 2.0 offers major improvements over earlier versions, including sharper image editing, improved text rendering, multilingual support and stronger visual reasoning capabilities. Users can generate images in multiple artistic styles and also upload existing photographs for editing or transformation using text prompts.
The company has also showcased the tool’s advanced realism through demonstrations featuring highly lifelike visuals that closely resemble professional photography and video production.
India has emerged as one of OpenAI’s fastest growing markets. Earlier this year, Altman stated that the country had crossed 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, underlining the scale of AI adoption among Indian consumers and creators.
The feature has also drawn attention from entrepreneurs and business leaders. Anupam Mittal recently praised the tool for helping users create polished professional profile photographs within seconds, calling it a solution to a long standing issue on professional networking platforms.
At the same time, the rapid spread of AI generated content has sparked debates around copyright concerns, deepfakes and the broader impact of generative AI on creative industries. Despite those concerns, enthusiasm around AI image tools continues to grow rapidly across India.
