CANACONA: The only Soulabh Sauchalaya in the heart of Canacona municipality is under lock and key for more than 50 days, even as the works to build a new Sauchalaya foundation stone laid in the last week of July is yet to begin , causing undue inconvenience to the public.
It may be recalled that the only public toilet at Old Bus-Stand operated by Saulabh Sauchalaya under Canacona municipality helping to ease the public in general was found overflowing with choked sanitary lines has been locked for public also in the last week of July.
This toilet is the only source for the traders and people/marketers at large visiting Canacona for trade and shopping, , has been often marred with closure due to its overflowing septic tanks and chocked pipeline.
Having no option, people who comes rushing at the toilet (unaware it is closed), often defecate and urinate in the open spreading foul smell all around in the area.
Many of the people during the cover of darkness often urinate and defecate in the open, just outside the locked Sulab Sauchalayala and vitiate the area.
Incidentally, this toilet constructed some two decades ago is set to be demolished to construct a new and larger 67 lakhs Sulabh Complex, for which Foundation Stone was laid on 27th July on the the occasion of Birthday of Canacona MLA & Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar.
On the day, Speaker has stated that This initiative is a significant contribution to the Swachh Bharat mission, aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene standards in the region. The new facility will enhance public health and contribute to the broader goal of a cleaner and healthier community’
Though its nearing two months, since laying of Foundation Stone, the works have still not started till date.
Due to inordinate delay even to commence the works and considering the time it will take construct the new one, people have demanded make an arrangement for a temporary bio-toilets to help the people .
Interestingly, it is believed that construction works will start soon after Ganesh festivities, but still people complain nothing is moving in the area either to demolish the existing one or to erect the new toilet.
