New Delhi: In the rapidly evolving landscape of global politics, India’s aspirations to lead the Global South face significant challenges, particularly from China’s rising economic and strategic influence. Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi recently underscored these challenges, emphasizing the need for India to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics. General Dwivedi highlighted Africa as a future power center and stressed India’s pivotal role due to its unique geography and demography. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of India playing a more active role in international frameworks and conflict resolution to bolster its position.
General Upendra Dwivedi noted that China’s economic and strategic dominance complicates India’s efforts to lead the Global South. China’s substantial investments and influence in developing nations have created a competitive environment where India struggles to assert its leadership. Despite its strategic advantages, including a large population, democracy, and geostrategic location, India faces challenges in shaping international decisions. Repeated blockages and setbacks, particularly within BRICS, have hindered India’s ability to influence key global policies.
General Dwivedi emphasized the importance of emerging technologies in national security, highlighting technological prowess as a new deterrent. He stressed that a robust military-civil fusion, an Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) defense industrial base, and dual-use assets are crucial for enhancing India’s security capabilities. In this context, data has become the new capital of trade and security, underscoring the need for India to leverage technology effectively.
The Army Chief advocated for reforming the UN Security Council to include Global South representatives, ensuring that developing countries have a greater voice in global decision-making. He also suggested that India should lead peacekeeping operations and the global war on terror, leveraging its firsthand experience with terrorism. This approach would not only enhance India’s global standing but also contribute to international peace and stability.
General Dwivedi highlighted the need for a multiworld order and bandwagoning of nations to prevent conflict. By engaging in frameworks like SCO, BRICS, and BIMSTEC, India can foster a more inclusive global environment. This strategy aligns with India’s vision of promoting a fairer global economic system and advocating for UNSC reforms, which are essential for the Global South’s interests.
