AQUEM: Aquem has seen an increase in thefts in the past several months, with cash, gold jewellery, and cell phones taken from homes and workshops.
Citizens have said that Aquem has become a target for criminals.
“These cases are being investigated, according to the police. There have also been instances of home invasions where different kinds of objects have been taken,” locals added.
The residents of Aquem are becoming more and more afraid of crime and dissatisfied with the ineffective response from law enforcement as a result of the recent wave of thefts and burglaries.
Panchayats such as those in Aquem have expressed concern that the increase in thefts and burglaries is mostly due to the influx of migrant workers. As a result, they have asked the police to step up their patrols and finish tenant verification activities.
Police officers linked to one of the police stations claim that staffing levels in some stations are startlingly low, with just a small number of officers working at specific locations, including head constables.
They said that the surveillance of migrant behaviour, drug cases, illegal trafficking, and crime investigation suffers from a lack of infrastructure and staff.
Residents have expressed concern about the increase in theft cases, which include break-ins at homes and apartments.
They have asked the authorities to install CCTV cameras and have demanded increased police night patrols, particularly during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival when many of the town’s residents will be travelling to their hometowns.
