COLVA: The issue of pollution in the Colva creek has resurfaced, with stagnant sewage and wastewater once again creating foul conditions in the water body. Restaurant owners operating along the creek have denied any involvement, attributing the contamination to wastewater flowing in through a nearby stormwater nullah.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, representatives of restaurants in the area stated that they are not responsible for discharging waste into the creek. They said several establishments have already applied for official sewage connections and are awaiting approvals.
Until such connections are granted, the owners said they are relying on night soil tankers to remove waste from septic tanks, adding that records of regular disposal are being maintained. They emphasized that restaurant operators themselves are among the most affected by the pollution.
The owners have also expressed willingness to connect to the Colva Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), but noted that some applications remain pending due to delays in obtaining road-cutting permissions.
Blaming the stormwater nullah for the contamination, they urged authorities to identify and act against those responsible for releasing untreated sewage into the creek.
Meanwhile, a local activist has called on government departments to expedite the approval process for sewage connections, stressing the need for cooperation and priority action to address the ongoing pollution issue.
