PANAJI: The Congress Legislature Party in Goa has authorised AICC interim president Sonia Gandhi to pick its leader after the newly elected legislators failed to reach a consensus on the leader of the Opposition.
Marred by factionalism and infighting, the Congress won 10 of the 40 seats in the Goa Legislative Assembly Elections last month.
A meeting of the newly-elected MLAs to choose the CLP leader was called at the party office in Panaji.
Sources present in the meeting said the MLAs proposed two names — former chief minister Digambar Kamat and former BJP leader and Minister Michael Lobo — for the post.
Once decided, the CLP leader will also act as Leader of Opposition in the Goa Assembly. The Congress legislators will sign the communication and send it to the Goa Speaker, giving their party’s leader’s name, who will be recognised by the Speaker as Leader of the Opposition.
For the past several months, Congress in Goa has suffered from fierce infighting. After the party’s poor performance in the Goa Assembly polls this year.
In the 40-member Assembly, BJP has 20 MLAs, MGP 2, AAP 2 and 1 RGP and three Independents. Besides MGP, three Independents have supported BJP in forming the government.
